To start off, you’ll want to re-think the type of content that appears on your blog and how it appeals to others. There are several routes you can go – the easiest being jumping on the viral content bandwagon to create the type of viral, shareable content that will attract eyeballs.
Wanting to create viral content, though, is much different from actually creating viral content. We all love the memes, the funny cat videos and the hilarious BuzzFeed articles – but how many of us have the in-house talent to create this type of content?
An alternative is to create the type of authoritative, thought leadership material that will turn your blog into a must-visit destination.
The second strategy you’ll want to pursue is building links with “influencers” across the Internet. The basic premise, of course, is that you want to find the types of influencers – bloggers, social media mavens and passionate fans – who will do all the heavy lifting for you. You won’t have to worry about creating and launching your own content if you have relationships with other bloggers who will mention your products and services for you. All those mentions mean more traffic for you.
Of course, this is easier said than done. Even the bloggers with the smallest audiences are hard to track down. But if you can sponsor events and make it something they’d like to talk about, it can be a goldmine. The #1 tool for many businesses is sending out an email newsletter. This makes sense – everyone checks email, and if you make your email newsletter compelling enough, it can be a regular source of daily or weekly website traffic. In some cases, all you have to do is aggregate the best content on your site, and push out a newsletter that will showcase it in an interesting way.
Social media is another big part of this strategy. No wonder so many websites are now filled with social sharing buttons – the goal is to create a wonderfully harmonious blog ecosystem where everyone seems to be talking about you, your business and what makes you so fabulous. This helps to build buzz for you and ultimately leads to more traffic.
As part of this strategy, don’t be afraid of uniting your online and offline presence. If you attend conferences or conventions, for example, why not make your website URL a prominent part of your marketing collateral? If you print physical brochures for clients, include content and information about your blog. You’d be surprised at just how often people type in a URL they see on a business card, brochure or conference swag.
